What neuroscience can and cannot tell us
Meditation and the brain
Imaging studies link meditation to changes in networks for self-referential thought, attention and emotion. The findings are promising, and worth reading carefully.

The default mode network
The default mode network (DMN) is a set of brain regions—including the medial prefrontal cortex and posterior cingulate cortex—that becomes active during mind-wandering and self-referential thinking. Work led by Judson Brewer found that experienced meditators showed relatively less activity in key DMN hubs during practice, alongside stronger coupling with regions involved in cognitive control.
In plain terms, practice appears to be associated with a quieter “story about me” and a greater ability to notice when that story has started running.
Attention and emotion systems
Research by Amishi Jha and others suggests mindfulness training can strengthen distinct attentional subsystems—the ability to stay alert, to orient, and to resolve competing demands. Other studies report changes in how strongly the amygdala, involved in threat detection, responds to stressors, and in its communication with the prefrontal cortex.
A widely cited review by Tang, Hölzel and Posner (2015) summarised evidence for effects on attention regulation, body awareness, emotion regulation and sense of self, while calling for more rigorous, longer-term studies.
Reading the science honestly
Neuroscience of meditation is young. Many early studies were small, used experienced meditators who differ in other ways, or lacked active control groups. Correlation is not proof that practice caused a given change, and a difference visible on a scan is not the same as a difference you will feel.
The honest summary is encouraging but modest: meditation is a plausible way to train attention and emotional awareness, and the brain is measurably shaped by what we repeatedly do. Extraordinary claims of rewiring the brain in days deserve scepticism.
